In a way, finally recovering from the after-effects of the championship at the end of 2019, Monterrey is gradually starting to wake up this season. After securing their second victory of the tournament with a 3-1 loss to Club America last week, there are now signs and clues from the Monterrey squad that were once Mexico’s most feared team.
Will they be able to clinch a second consecutive victory for the first time since last December?
The very talented pieces are all there for manager Antonio Mohamed. After beating Club America, Juarez shouldn’t have a big headache in theory.
But what about Juarez?
Slightly spurred on by the arrival of aging megastar Marco Fabian, there’s reason to believe the Bordertown side could perhaps create some playoff-worthy magic with former Eintracht Frankfurt player now on their listing. The question for this weekend, however, is whether that will be enough to defeat the mighty Monterrey.
What influence will Fabian have on Juarez?
While many eyes will rightly focus on the long list of renowned talent that Monterrey will field this weekend, by contrast, many will keep an eye on Fabian as well.
Now 31, with a history of unfortunate injuries behind him, Fabian no longer has the same pace and explosiveness that once partly defined him.
That said, fans got to see some of his vintage form when he debuted for Juarez last week.
As an attacking midfielder, Fabian covered a surprising amount of ground and made some smart passes in the final third of the 0-0 win over Leon.
Still, even though he has a brilliant performance that includes a classic golazo, we should still expect Monterrey to thwart him with his own chances.
The sleeping giant woke up.
Once a team that mixed a long list of draws and losses, Monterrey turned heads last weekend with a 3-1 victory over the nation’s most successful team, Club America.
Encouraged by goals from Nicolas Sanchez,
Vincent Janssen and Maximiliano Meza, Monterrey showed real and tangible signs of their dominance last year leading to a 2019 Apertura Championship. Undefeated in the last four teams and with many goals starting to arrive . , it looks like the Nuevo Leon team is really starting to pick up speed.
Monterrey crossed a mountain to defeat Club America and after the victory a small hill now stands in front of Juarez.
Rogelio Funes Mori is expected for an outstanding performance
Sure, Janssen won a red last week, but that now opens up a chance for Funes Mori to make his mark in the upcoming game.
Unscored in the last five games,
the Argentina striker should be motivated to make up for Janssen’s absence and take the reins back as a target for Monterrey at the top.
Knowing that he will undoubtedly be the striker of choice this weekend, it would be almost shocking to see Funes Mori extend his scoreless score to six straight games.
