Austin Riley dominated, doubled and led by three points in the second inning of the Atlanta 10 points, Dansby Swanson was also deep and the Braves held a savage 12-10 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday night.
Nick Markakis and Marcell Ozuna each added three wins and two.
RBIs for the first-place Braves, who avoided a three-game sweep and moved three games past the Phillies and Miami to NL East. Every Atlanta starter has had at least one shot and scored at least one point.
Andrew McCutchen, Rhys Hoskins, Didi Gregorius and Roman Quinn took over the Phillies, whose five-game winning streak was broken.
“Our boys fought,” said Phillies manager Joe Girardi. “We just went out a little less.”
The teams combined for 28 hits in a game that lasted 4 hours and 13 minutes.
Every Braves hitter scored at least once in a second, which started innocently enough when Markakis landed against pitcher Jake Arrieta (2-4). But Arrieta didn’t knock out another when he faced the next seven hitters and was relieved for David Hale after Marcell Ozuna’s RBI single that scored 5-0.
Hale, who made his first appearance for the Phillies since being acquired by the Yankees on Aug.21, gave Travis d’Arnaud an RBI single, Markakis a two-point brace, and finally a two-point practice. far left – Riley cross who brings the Braves forward 10-0.
Even with the big lead, Braves manager Brian Snitker didn’t feel relaxed on the Phillies baseball field.
“You are never safe on this baseball field,” he says. “You never feel comfortable with any benefit.”
The Phillies returned to the bottom of the frame on Gregorius’ solo shot to the right before scoring six runs for third starter Tommy Milone. McCutchen’s RBI double, Hoskins ‘double homer on the left, Gregorius’ triple on the right and Phil Gosselin’s RBI playing field gave Philadelphia hope. The Phillies actually got the go-ahead for the plate in the frame. But McCutchen, beating for the second time in the heats, lost with the runners in first and second. We have never lowered our heads,” said Gregorius.
“It just shows you that our team never gives up.”
The Braves had a little more leeway in Ozuna’s fifth RBI single left which scored 11-8.
But the Phillies finished eighth on back-to-back Quinn and McCutchen solo homers with southpaw Will Smith. Smith managed to escape more trouble by getting Hoskins and Harper out.
Swanson broke the center wall in ninth place for a two-point damper for Mark Melancon, who threw a scoreless ninth for his sixth save on seven occasions.
“It’s a great addition here,” Snitker said of Swanson’s humerus.
A J. Minter (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 inning scoreless for the win.
Arrieta lasted just 1 ⅓ inning and gave up seven runs on six hits with three walks and no strikeouts.
“It was only on the whole field that he didn’t hit the ball very well,” said Arrieta.
Milone conceded seven runs in the second inning in his first start with the Braves after being signed by the Orioles last Sunday for two players to name. Atlanta is hoping the 33-year-old southpaw can help with the rotation. Milone is the eleventh different starter the Braves have used this season and most of them haven’t had much success. Southpaw Max Fried is 5-0 with an ERA of 1.35, and Braves’ other 10 starters are a 1-10 combined with a 7.23.
HOT HOSKINS
Hoskins went deep for the fourth time in six games.
ADJUST
Freddie Freeman extended his winning streak to 13 straight games with a two-run single in the second.
GIRARDI GONE
Girardi was sent off by second baseman Bill Welke in ninth place after suffering a foul ball appeal from Ender Inciarte.
“Tonight I didn’t deserve to be pushed around for what I said and I’m pretty frustrated,” said Girardi.
