Tom Cairney admits he and his Fulham teammates “went beyond ourselves” when they were promoted to the Premier League two years ago – and insists it won’t happen again.
The Cottagers teamed up with Leeds and West Brom to be promoted to No. 1 after beating Brentford in the play-off final earlier this month.

Big things were expected from Fulham in 2018/19 but returned to the league immediately, conceding 81 Premier League goals along the way.
And Cottagers captain Cairney, who was part of that Fulham team, shed light on the mistakes.
He told talkSPORT: “Last time around we anticipated because we were undefeated for half a season in the league.
“We spent a lot of money and some even talked about qualifying for the Europa League … the Premier League is a cutthroat league and we found out.”

But Cairney believes manager Scott Parker, who has promised Fulham not to make the same mistakes, has an ‘elite mindset’ that will keep all club members grounded at the start of the new Premier League season . .
Cairney added: “We’ll leave it to the manager.
What he did in his first year is just amazing and maybe he’s not getting the credit he deserves.
“I am sure he will be fully aware of the task ahead.
He has only recently played in the Premier League.
“It was our first day back on Monday and we never talked about the final. This was what lies ahead.
“I remember when we climbed for the first time there was an invasion of the pitch in the semi-final second leg; we went out, we were celebrating that night.
With Scott we were like a little group and he said “well done”, we just got on the bus and headed home.
“I think it’s his elite mentality, he played at the top, he was England captain and that is disappearing at the club.”
